Description

Vol. II, pg. 48a Letter from Grace Nicholson to Harry George discussing baskets he is still wanting for his collection. December 27, 1910. Mr. Harry L. George, 201 Saxton Bank Bldg., St Joseph, Mo., Dear Sir: – Great congestion the mails probably accounts for the little booklet not reaching me on regular time. I am returning it to you immediately, with notes on the tribes you have written in the book. The Baskets you returned have been received in good condition. Also your check of $104 in full of account. Regarding prices would state that I thought you would rather be on my list of net customers, and, I assure you that the net prices are less than if I simply gave you 10% discount from my regular retail prices. I have already sold to collectors in the last few months nearly 800 Baskets, and I am sure I would not be able to do this if my prices were not right. The fact is that I am paying more money for Baskets of certain tribes than I sold fine specimens for two years ago., and am obliged to get most of my fine old ones from Collections, as it is impossible to get them from the Indians, at the present time. The old Ute Basket you mention was sold, within a week of my writing to you, and I have no others in stock. I have a few old eastern Baskets but these are mostly made from splints. The difference in the Apaches is mostly in the design and the material. Shapes and weave are about the same. The Pueblo of Taos is not in ruins, being the best preserved of any of the Pueblos. The old Church there was destroyed by the soldiers. These people use Baskets made by the Utes and Apaches (Jicarilla mostly). You probably have enough specimens of Salishan and Pomos, as you say, but there is a great difference in Mission Baskets. When you are east you might find in some store which carries Mexican Baskets a specimen of the Yaqui which you need. I am delighted to hear that the St Joseph people are at last to have the benefit of your researches. I know it will not only be a great source of enjoyment but instructive as well. Trusting the New Year will be a prosperous one, I am Very truly yours, Grace Nicholson
