Letter from Grace Nicholson to Harry George discussing baskets she has that might help him fill out his collection, and her planned trip east.
May 2, 1911.
Mr. Harry L. George,
201 Saxton Bank Bldg.,
St Joseph, Mo.,
Dear Sir: -
I have been wondering for sometime whether you have returned from New York, but have been too busy to take up my correspondence, having sold over 1600 Baskets this year besides a large Collection of Museum material and my entire Eskimo Collection. I shall close my Shop June 1st for another four or five months among the Indians.
Your list of April 27th at hand and find that I have nothing which you call for. You probably have Cayuse Baskets of Oregon. These are the same as the Waiilatpuan. I had Tanean specimens These were from Jemez pueblo, N. M., but they are all sold.
In a former letter you asked for further information regarding the Utes and Piutes. We usually refer to the Utes as the Indians in Colorado and the border of New Mexico and Arixona. Their work is distinct from that of the Piutes of Nevada and Inyo and Mene Counties, Calif.
Most of the fine Navajo wedding and ceremonial Baskets were made by the Utes.
I am expressing you 2775 Panamint, ordered by you in Jan. It is a beautiful Basket I am sure you will be pleased with it
And find it an addition to your collection.
I may get as far east as Kansas City this year. If so shall surely try and call upon you and see your beautiful collection of Baskets.
I hope you had good luck in the far East securing specimens of the eastern Indian work.
Trusting to hear from you whenever I can be of service, I am
Very truly yours,
