Miss Anna,
Your letter was sent yesterday morning (by your Mother) we were very glad to hear from you and the young Ladies. Mrs. N_____ recv'd first of the letter last eve. it is the second one she has recv'd but I did not see the first and you say last that you have not recv'd any letters yet from home which accounts for my not receiving any from you.
it is said that Mr. ??? recvd one several days ago from Miss M. Though, he has said nothing to me about it. I shall look for one this eve and if I am disappointed shall certainly think that my letter has been miscarried and for fear it has, will just write you a few lines to tell you that I wrote according to promise. Also to tell you first of what I have been doing since you left as well as the Boys and young folks generally. I have been flying around at a fast rate with the young Ladies. Beygriding calling & and have managed to exist but the time has dragged very slowly and although I have very gay time last evening at the Ladies B. A. Festival took with Mrs. N___ and don't you think we stayed out until nearly 12 o'clock. Mr Austill and his assistants did the honors very nicely and we were well provided with all the delicacies of the season. We were provided with a P.O. Gipsies tent & Misses Mary Owens & Jennie Roubidoux acted as Postmasters and delivered letters to all who would pay the necessary postage. I recvd one with Miss Anna Nash's signature, showed it to your mother and she took possession of it. It said something like " Love in a Cottage" and "Munsion soap" and resembled your handwriting very much. Miss Katie McDonald was the Gypsy and did the fortune telling. She was very anxious to tell my fortune but thinking she had a set speech for me declined having it told. I think the association met with good success.
There were a goodly number of young folks in attendance during the evening especially after the close of the Theatre (Play of Lady of Lyons by our amateurs for the benefit of the Public School Library) A great many came across to the festival. I had the pleasure of meeting Miss Mary Thompson from New Orleans, Daughter of Gen. Jeff Thompson, we spent a very pleasant half hour together from ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? of the tables. She will remain here until the last of Sept. She introduced me to her Pa. I also met Miss Campbell from near Nashville Tenn. a niece of Mrs. Ridenbaugh. A very pretty and stylish young Lady besides of our old acquaintances. Am sorry today that the Boys - Mr. Blackmore - Higgins - Marlow and ? ? ? failed to put in an appearance and by the way Mr H & B tell me that Mr. M. is sick trouble with the heart disease and said there is but one remedy and that is an assistant which would be "two hearts with but a single thought.
Did you have me in charge of Miss Pinick if so all right and I would like to know how many more I must be while you are absent, Miss Polaines that you did like and as her Lover Mr. Geo. D. B. has gone and also sequestered me to kinda watch her I feel it my duty as well as pleasure to kindly care for him in this his loneliness. Geo. B. left on this noon train for St. Louis to fill his new enjoyment he has been very attentive to his Lady Love for sometime past and if you could keep a secret I will tell you they are not engaged yet but have an understanding and Geo. thinks I had better look after his interests and as there is to be a large Lake party tonight I shall take her down thinking that the ? ? ? lake ? ? may have an exciting effort on her poor ? ? ? ? but how I would like to have you in her place this evening, but you are far away and I presume having a very pleasant time with your old friends and I must manage to kill time until you return.
(written around the edge of the pages, and upside down on the last)
Mr. Higgins returned from his soap trip last Saturday.
Remember me to Misses Gestruell and May also Mr. & Mrs G? ? ? give them my kindest regrets.
Mr. Wm Wilson and Miss Reyens marry on the 9th of July.
I had no idea of being on the last page and was a little ? ? ? when I turned the paper over and saw that all four pages were full as I only intended to write a short letter this time and I have not begun to tell you the news. Please excuse me and I will finish when I receive yours.
