Miss Annie
I am tired of books, tired of study and tired of talking to the same people who crowd around my path every day. I have been sitting here in the church study for the last hour "thinking, thinking, fancy unto fancy linking," and all about I scarcely know what until my thoughts seem to force on you, I hardly know whether you will think it a compliment there to share a part in a chain of undefinable thought. And yet under the circumstance it is a decidedly a compliment too, Miss Annie, if anything coming from such a source is worthy to be considered complimenting by yourself as I have said my thoughts were rambling, scattered, and unsatisfactory, and I was unable to concentrate them until they have upon you. I came up here for the purpose for making some preparation for Wednesday evening for which it ? ? ? upon me to consider by imposition somewhat too, I think, ? ? I constructed the last for writing. though the elders have given me to understand that I will have it to do during this F's absence, so you see, I am of some service. And I thank God that I have at last grown to love it rather than otherwise, And it is religious pleasure now. And would be more so if our people would turn out better, though you know they never turn out very
largely. As many last meeting I think as usual, as I started today I came up to make some preparation for it, I scensed not to be in a condition for such thought. I failed to get farther than the selection of a chapter and verse, 40th of Isiah, last two verses there was something in that ? ? ? ? in the last verse that seemed to comfort me. I felt that I wanted to "renew my strength, to ? ? ? and not be weary, to walk and not faint." I thought over the words , but they were not such thoughts that would do for understanding me, but as my friend, yea my very soul, seemed determined not, to give up that peculiar chain, I concluded to postpone the preparation, And give the ? ? ? to my thoughts where they seemed to have focused.
How you came to be tangled up in that web of thought I leave it to you, or the "Fable Gods" to unfold, I only knew it was so. And now I find myself writing to you, Well I suppose I can at least be permitted to think of you. And even to talk to you at intervals, even at a distance. As I am it seems to be permitted little else. Well I believe all things work for my good, under the mercy of God, and though but a faint idea (for I believe I have some idea) of the no doubt wise dispensation which lead you from here this summer. I shall not murmur but say you will not mine be done. Miss Anna thy sheet is full, and I am not near through talking, though one sheet is your limit at least to me. "Just ? ? 7th & Francis leave off care DR
Some "Sweet Sweet Home" I will ? ? ? in that day God willing I shall be an ambassador for Christ, and I can then fill what ever aching void there may be in this unworthy heart with love for the undying souls of my fellow beings, and for the Savior whose dear blood has given me "a hope beyond the grave". I expect you are still in Nashville, but to be sure I will see your mother and ask her for your address. Please send it from time and wont you be as ? ? ? again, and ? ? ? ? , I haven't done so I know but it was from consideration for you. And remember your sheets are very small. I should like to have a long talk in answer to this. Many regards to both of the young ladies, and tell them many are grieving because of their absence. I had a long talk about them and you yesterday evening. Ask the friends you are with if they are not tired of you. I wont impose on you any longer, good bye. a long one and soon with kind wishes very sincerely FGR
You know I dont like to impose on you. I know you have others to write to and especially one which I know takes much of your time, and also considerable brain work in order to frame those thoughts and feelings of the heart which I know goes out to that favored one. I suppose I ought to congratulate you if it is ? ? ? true. I hope it is a wise choice , and that you are ? ? ? ? ? ? ? happy in it. I had a long ride with the D on the 4th I happened to drop in to see him, and he kindly offered to take me out to the picnic just out of town. And at 4 o'clock we went ? ? ? ? but few there, no one that I knew. Stayed only a short time. He then took me down to the Exposition grounds & all together I had a pleasant ride. I like the D very much and wish him much joy. I thought much of you while I was with him. Thought of how happy you would have been to have had my dear Anna then how perfectly happy she would have been. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Anna if you dont intend that I shall see you any more I think you might write and tell me about it, I hear much talk about it here and would like so much to know just how affairs stand. I dont know when it shall be my privilege to sit and talk with you again. And you have little idea how much I would like to do so, at least just one more before Miss Anna is gone forever. As you seen determined not to come back before Sept., if I do not go to Va. I will probably not return here next summer. As I fear Dr. Rice will give up his connection with West Minister, And I shall have to go right in from there. (if I go there this coming session) next summer to some regular Theological Seminary, there to ? ? ? until my course is completed and I an ready to enter upon the blessed work. So you see I have little idea that we shall meet again for two, perhaps three years, and ea. them I have small doubt but that Miss Anna will have ? ? ? place to ? ? ? ? who will be brightening and making happy.Collection
