Context

St Joseph Missouri September 30th 1874 My Dear Daughter I have just finished reading a letter from you in which you speak of being disappointed in not getting a letter from me giving you some advise you asked for. I am very sorry I did not write you on receipt of yours but I thought you were jesting and treated your letter in that way. I had a good laugh over it, of course if the young man has the qualities you wrote me I do not see what objection I could ??? am perfectly willing for you to be a farmers wife think you can't get a better living than to be the wife of a preacher and especially where there is so little energy. I like Mr. R_____ very well but he is not quite so favorable with me as last year he has hurt himself very much here by taking sides against Mr. Fackler. His warmest friends are thinking very hard of him and the married portion of our church too. I think he has acted very unwise and I feel very sorry about it. The young man with light hair and blue eyes looks very nice to me; so sweet and clean all the time but of course I have it to you but be shure and make a wise decision. I hardly know what I am to do with you unless I keep you myself if Mr. Haley is to be married of course unless you can cut the young lady out on ?????? it has gone too far for that. I have been looking for a house for some time want to leave this in October if I can get a house that will suit me. There was a very nice brick home near Mr. Flints has been idle three months but I did not find it out until it was rented, could have gotten it for the same I pay for this. Mr. Buell wants to rent his new house and go back to his old one. I guess he thinks he can get more for the new house says he has never been satisfied over on tenth. I have been over at your Grandmas today helping her to peal peaches for canning and preserving. I could not stay all evening as there was a lady coming to give Lizzie her first music lesson. she is an old lady from St. Louis has been a music teacher for thirty years. She is very much pleased with Lizzie beginning she thinks she can make a fine scholar out of her she learns so readily Elvie takes her first lesson tomorrow but not from the same teacher I left Miss Kate over at Mothers helping to can some of the peaches your Grandma ???? ten pounds of preserves this morning and helped to get dinner. Aunt Mary left this morning she hated to leave very much but she is so broken down that she was obliged to leave and rest up. (sideways at the top of page 1) Mr. Foreman came yesterday will preach tonight I will have to close this and get ready for church before supper as Mr. Marlow comes so very ??? that I would not have time to get ready after. My advise to you in this be careful how you write to Mr. R_____ doesn't get yourself in a close place. I hardly think he would you as it is very necessary to have something on him besides love. love will do for a few weeks. I wish you would get on to Chicago. I will think there the time there is not far distant when I will see you again want to see your mother by this time. (upside down along the top of pages 2 & 3) Give my love to all the folks and tender my thanks to Mr. Rowland for his kindness to you and say to him I would be pleased to see he and Mrs. Rowland in St. Joseph as guests of mine. Much love for yourseld. Your Mother
