Scope and Content

Two letters from John Doyle Barrow to his wife, Catherine Moss Barrow. From Margaret Sparrow: "John Doyle Barrow was a very intelligent and funny man, conservative by nature, and a lover of vritue and honesty. These two letters demonstrate his originality, good humor, and deep affection for and admiration of his wife. He loved the military and quail hunting. He bred and raised fine English Pointers, and started Barrow Bros. Real Estate and Insurance Co. in St. Joseph. He was one time police commissioner of the city and served also a state senator. He was J.B. Moss's son-in-law and my grandfather. As children, my brother and I often stayed with my grandparents at their home on 21st St. since destoryed by fire. It was a duplex and they lived on the 2nd floor with a wonderful front veranda with large wooden swing and a small, comfortable back screened in porch with a honeysuckel vine. We called our grandparents Dolio and Grammy. Dolio made up ridiculous and sometimes scary stories about odd little creatures that lived in their home. The "river rat" and the "knifeman", and the "brownies", etc. After a kidney operation, he was required to drink 8 glasses of water a day. He would fill up 8 small juice glasses of with water, line them up along the kitchen counter an drink them one after the other until they were all empty. When my brother and I stayed there, he had Stephen begin at one end of the water glass line and my grandfather began at the other and they drank the water together! He could be very strict, however, about the noise we made after we had been put to bed for the night."
