Context

Querida, This promises to be a lengthy epistle, for I have not one, but two sermons to report. I surely am sorry not to have written any letters to you this last week; the time just wouldn't slow down long enough for me to get everything done. Last Sunday I did all those things I told you about: . . . . , . . . . , and . . . . Mama was tired from our night of canasta . . ., so she didn't go hear L & M. Daddy & I went & enjoyed it very much. . . . Larrie sounded grand; . . . And Max, . . . , is a whiz on that old, . . . organ. . . . . . . . . . . We all loved Wayne King . . . .Wayne sure looks like Uncle John when he smiles. We had very good seats . . . . , . . . Monday ever my Spanish class had una fiesta in a boy scout lodge . . . [John is home & going to J. C. ; . . . , and is now cuter than ever] It was a real nice party and six alumnae attended. Dave Holland . . couldn't make it; . . . . And Ray Sollars is with the Army. . , . . I got a nice letter from him the day of the party. . . . . Tuesday night I stayed home but got non letters written. Wed. was Civic Music, . . . and Thursday I had P.T.A. in the afternoon and coir at night. . . . . . Friday Papa went to a party (stag) for Mr. Wilson, so Ma & I batched it. Yesterday I sewed on your tweed skirt - . . . , . . Hope it fits when I get done. Tonight I'm going over to the Killackey's for Young Adult meeting. John's to talk about religion in the home. . . . . This weather - . . . . ? It has been just like spring this week - . . . & today I did wear my cashmere a couple of times, . . . . ! We got the program for your honors convocation, . . . , we're really proud of you for being so smart. John Lau . . . said, "I see where your sister is a brain." . . I said, "There's one in every family" I get so mad at Don Faurot . . . When his other boys aren't clicking, why doesn't he give Vic a chance! . . . . Hope they're "on again" next week against K. U. Margot's father-in-law died, so she and Mark are going up there tomorrow. Geo. Lacy left for service last Wed. . . . Mrs. Lacy (. . . ) went home from the hospital yesterday. . . . . Louise is working on her play at J. C. . . . . Saw my K. A. friend today, . . . . Miss Gallagher made me chairman of her costume committee for the Pageant this year, and she didn't even ask me. . . . . . My circle meets tomorrow night . . . Now that all my news and views have been told, I'll get down to the business at hand, John's two sermons . . . . . Christian Optimism "I am most happy to welcome the members of the Optimists Club, and their wives, to our service this morning . . . . . their club owes its very existence to that church, without which there would (be) no charitable, worthwhile, working organization and no optimism. " . . . . , 'Only two things in this world are sure death and taxes' . . . . But Christianity has overcome death, . . . why can we not overcome everything? . . . . . . . Therefore we can go forward, with Christian optimism to greater achievements." He inspired me so I decided that single-handed, I would get us a new organ. Fear Expelled "There is no fear in love." "God . . . loves. There should be no fear in our love of God, . . . . (we) retain the childhood idea of God as a majestic figure . . . . with a huge book before him, in which he writes all our misdeeds. A God like that . . . can only be feared. He is not loved; . . . " . . . . . . . . .So we must learn to love our Father in Heaven. Then shall our fear be expelled. But it is not God alone whom we must love, but also our fellow man. If we say we love God, but hate our fellow men, then we do not truly love God. "We must love one another." It was a mighty fine sermon, as was the other. It is now 3:40, and I have written and written and written, so best I stop. We're all fine and hope you are too. Much love, P.S. Mama will write mañana. We thot this'd hold you for a while! M.
