Queridisima,
We are having a vacation from school today - can you imagine? Sunday it snowed 7 inches, and yesterday 6 more, so we got out at 2:30 yesterday, and had no school today. But today turned out sunny, and the snow is melting, so Im' disgusted, even tho' I like the holiday. We'll just have to make it up, and they'll prob'ly want us to take the Monday after Easter! If so, I think I'll sprain my left eyebrow so I can't go that day.
It really was quite a snow tho', the deepest in 22 years! When Daddy took mo to Sun. school it had been snowing about 1½ hours, & was slick, so he stopped on the way home to have his chains put on. It's a good thing he did, too, 'cause by the rime church was out it was several inches deep. And windy! It drifted 2 & 3 feet deep in laces. Of course I love it, but it sure put a link in the Richmond's plans to fly from K.C. to Florida. They had meant to leave Monday, got as far as K.C. & got rounded. Finally left on the train, & won't get there till tomorrow.
The Monsons left early Sun., about an hour before the snow started. They got to Liberal, Kans., which is pretty far out, so must have gotten way from the worst of it. We're still up in the air as far as knowing about the office is concerned, but everyone seems to think it will be closed. Time alone will tell, I guess. Hope they let us know before too long, tho'.
The way the weather is now, it looks like you could come this weekend. Daddy should make a trip to Princeton,he says,so could get you okay. However,Mother will call you Thursday to tell you definitely. It is so hard t know what the weather will do.
I thot' you might enjoy these clippings. Isn't it shame Bob & Schoony are so dumb? And what do you think of D. Adams playing with the Maryville team? I thot' he was in the Air FOrce. I wondered if Kelly had left town - evidently not. The cartoon was in the K.C. paper; we are getting it for a week-introductory offer.
When I get this & some other letters done, I'm going to walk down to the P. O. to mail them. Then I think I'll go down to the garage o see if "Belle"m(as Daddy calls it) will still start. Haven't had it out since Saturday.
Saturday, by the way, I had a good time in K.C. with Alice & Betty. Bt I didn't see any plaid jackets for you - all are plain. I didn't buy a thing, but Betty got 2 summer dresses, Alice got one (at Peck & Peck) and red shoes & purse. We ate at Macy's for lunch & at the "Coate House" for supper - had wonderful roast capon there. We got home about 7 p.m. Weren't we lucky the snow came Sunday?!
John was real good Sunday on his second sermon on the Beatitudes. In this one he said, "Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted." He interpreted mourning in the largest sense of the word. for he said "they that mourn are open-minded, and therefore willing to learn, open-hearted, willing to love; and with an open conscience, willing to see their own errors and to correct them." If we are open-minded, we see conditions in the world as they really are, and we strive to improve them. If we are open-hearted, we mourn for the heartbreak of others. "I wonder how many hearts in St. Joseph bled for the young people of our city who are being misled by night club owners who sell liquor to minors? Do we really think it's doing any good to merely close such places for 2 or 3 weeks?" If we have an open conscience, we mourn for our own misdeeds, & are like the publican in the Bible who said, "God be merciful to me, a sinner," instead of like the Pharisee who thanked God that he was not like the other men.
Next Sunday of course, is the one you want to heat. "Meekness in a Mad World."
I have been figuring my income tax today. The Federal Gov't owes me $1.80, but I have to pay $9 to the state. You can't win!
Sure was an exciting game with Oklahoma! Bet you can hardly contain yourself.
Best I stop. We are all fine and hope you are, too. Hope to see you Friday.
