Queridisima,
It is 4:30 p.m. and I have just finished the A.A.U.W. income tax report. We are exempt, but have to file a return anyway. What a headache.
It is a beautiful day, 'tho' it started out quite cloudy. It's much cooler than yesterday, . . . . We went out to Bud's, . . . . . Papa drove over, I drove home. We spent lots of money, . . one of the cylinder valves had a carbon deposit on it, . . . . . .- $12.00! . . our windshield washer pump was defunct, . . . $6.50. . . we can tell you all about it later. . . . ., . . . Gene was there working on his own car. . . Mrs Rigdon had a tumor over her ear removed . . . the other girl left. . . . So he has two new girls. . . . . . a nice red headed fellow . . . worked on our engine . . . .
Mama called Mar today to see if they were okay after the big hailstorm. . . . Fred E . . . car . . . visor was damaged by the golf ball-size hailstones.
. . . . John was most excellent today, . . . He spoke on "On Being Merciful", . . . read the story of the Good Samaritan, . . . he reiterated his statement about the open-minded, open-hearted, and conscience. . . . he went on to say those first Beatitudes needed definition & explanation because of their paradoxical nature. . . . . . . . , so we need not define it.
. . . then, . . . why did Jesus put it in the Beatitudes? . . . . . . . . Then perhaps we do need to explain & define Jesus' words about the blessings of the merciful.
Mercy runs headlong into many obstacles in our modern world; . . . The Romans believed not in mercy, but in the law, . . . . We, also, have laws and revere justice, . . .
If we are merciful, we cannot desire revenge, . . . We cannot be jealous, either, . . . . . . . .
"Mercy and jealousy cannot reside in the heart side by side. . . . .; these are not merciful, but merciless.
"And the good man is not always merciful, either. . . . . .
"Who, then, is merciful? . . . . All of us have need of this mercy; all of us has sought revenge, or been jealous, . . . . Mercilessness is a cycle, . . . But so is Mercy. . . , so someone, . . . should start it.
" . . , Jesus, who was full of mercy, died on a cross. . . mercy sometimes brings mercilessness. . . . . Why should we not be he ones to start the cycle of mercy?"
I have gone on a great length. . . Tonight I'm going to the church h.s. group meeting to talk about teaching as a vocation. . . . . I asked Miss Hash to come too. . . . I know the kids will enjoy & benefit from what she has to say. . . . .
Tomorrow night is circle meeting . . .
I looked in "The Man from Nazareth" for your research paper, but. . . nothing would help you . . .
It is now 5:30 . . . . just about time to stop, . . .We are all fine and hope you are, too.
I shall enclose $5 - courtesy of Mother. . . .
Love,
P.S. Read that Vic Mature plays a Greek slave in "The Robe", which is in production. . . . .Lexicon
