Querida hermanita,
Just a few lines before I take ace my bath & then help get supper. I have been sewing this p.m.; . . . . Mar & Fred E left about 1:15; . . . . It snowed this morning . . . . , but it was clear and melting . . . with reports of no snow in the west & south. . . . Their car was loaded as they took everything they would need.
. . . we didn't have such a long visit. . , they were out to Fred E's folks' all last week. But, I'm glad she could visit . . . when you were home & I was out of school.
Sunday
Didn't get finished yesterday, as you can see. . . . . Daddy & I went to see Lafayette beat Central.. . It was a good game . . . . . . . . . . .
We didn't stay for the Benton, C.B. game . . . Mama didn't go because she said she didn't care anything about it, . . . besides Mar (called) . . . about 8:50, . . . She said they had no trouble . . . . So we were glad of that.
This a.m. . . . . We had only 6 at S.S., but lots at church. John was excellent as usual. He . . . , used a different call to worship, . . . so you will find it in the bulletin. . . . , here's the gist of what he said.
There are hundreds of definitions of the essence of Christianity, but, . . . "What does my religion mean to me?" Does it mean . . . . , . . . ? Does it mean . . . . , . . ? Does it mean . . . , . . . ? No! . . . Our religion is a restless one full to the brim with the search after perfection. . . . . . . . . the Revised (King James) Edition says, "You must be perfect. There is no choice, it is categorically mandatory" . . . . .
Ours is a restless religion because . . . . , Jesus Christ was a restless leader. . . . . . . . . He had always to be about His Father's business.
Jesus came to fulfill the law, not to break it, to fill it full of meaning. But the priests didn't like his way of fulfilling it. He gave the Sabbath back to man. . . . ; He preached the turning of the other cheek, . . . ; He taught, "love thy enemies," . . . ; He drove the money lenders out of the Temple, and five days later He hung on a cross.
But our restless religion didn't stop with Jesus' death. . . " . . unless I (depart from you), the Holy Spirit cannot descend unto you." . . . without the Holy Spirit, our religion could not have been spread . . . to all corners of the world. . . . . . Our restless religion is always moving, moving, moving.
Oh, it bogged down, it went to sleep. In the 17th century. . . And in England it bogged down, went to sleep . . . In this country . . . it went to sleep, . . it took Cumberlands to wake it up.
But it always woke up. . . . and we must keep it moving, . . to be perfect. . . . . . "Our restless religion forever seeks to change our imperfections into God's perfection; its peace isin striving, its rest is in moving." . . . .
. . . That's quite a sermon, . . . Mar said she wrote you a "little" of last week's. I was sorry to miss it. . . . . I sang this a.m., . . . Larrie . . . said, " . . , we need you". . . . I mumbled as I passed John, . . . He just grinned . .
This evening I am going to the Young Adult meeting. . . . . . Bob Thomas . . . is to show pictures . . . on his world trip . . ; it should be very interesting. . . .
Why don't you get us some VP down there? . . . . I don't think anyone here has it.
. . . . G. Emerson Scott is engaged to Nancy Hayes, . . . . Know her? Emerson is a sergeant in the Marines . . . They are to be married in the spring.
Billie is going (to drive) out to join Hank next week. . . . Then Hank can drive back with 'em, on his way to . . O.C.S. . . . Billie was awarded $3,000 for her suit . . . She had asked $50,000.
. . . , we are a little in doubt . . . about coming down next week-end. I don't' think I should. . come on the bus, . . I'm just getting over my cold and would be afraid of catching another one. If f we all came, we could . . get a place to stay without much trouble. . . . we could get (tickets) at the last minute. . . . I guess you had just better look for us when you see us. . . . . We couldn't come 'til Sat., if we come. . . . .
Did I tell you I started 'A Farewell to Arms'? . . . . "Well, it's different" . . . .
There are all kinds of good movies on now. "My Cousin Rachel" is coming . . . That I would like to see.
Mother says I will have put two stamps on this, . . . .
We are all fine now and hope you are too. Take good care of yourself.
