Dearest Barb -
This is a continuation of the letter started earlier today. This time I'll try to get John's sermon in. He spoke on "Religion in Sandals", as the Bulletin tells you, and his Scripture losson was the story of Peter's release from prison by the Angle of the Lord, who broke Peter's shackles, drugged the guards, & enabled Peter to escape from 40 soldiers. "But, I have left out part of the story, and I have done it purposely. The Angel said to Peter, 'Get up, and put on your sandals'. He said to Peter, in effect, 'You do the possible; God will do the impossible.' And so it is always - God will always do for us the things we cannot do for ourselves, but He will never do for us the things we can do for ourselves."
John then gave several other examples of how God, or Jesus, helped people by getting them to help themselves. . . . . , for faith alone cannot always heal us; . . . .
It is only when we "put on our sandals" that God can give us his wonderful gifts of joy and peace. . . . ."trust in the heart, belief in the mind, and submission in the soul," and always do our part, so God can do His in our lives. . . . God is our Father, and He does not give us gifts of peace & joy until we are ready to use them."
We sang, & John narrated, "St. Francis Prayer," . . . John quoted it. . . . . "Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is darkness, light; where there is despair, hope; for it is in giving we receive; in pardoning, are pardoned; i is in dying that we are born to eternal life.". . .
Waa stalking ro Joyce Ann a little bit ago about her new job; she is finding the going a bit tough. . . . Mr Thomas . . . "blows up on occasion." . . . So - maybe she's earning her extra pay.
As Mother just told you. it is HOT here, & has been all day. . . . we've been fortunate, & now . . . it's hard to take.
Our Spanish Club picnic was great fun. . . . a perfect night for it. We went out on Wyeth Hill. I drove of course.
Ronnie Etchison is wrestling this Friday - guess I'll go. . Sonny Myers got arrested for speeding the other day. . . . .
Well, Sweetie, guess I've rambled on long enough. . . . We're all fine and hope you are, too.
Lots of love,
P.S. You can no doubt tell I have run out of stationary!
P.P.S. We have your $10 room deposit slip . . Do you need it?
