Scope and Content

A single page letter on a long blue paper, written on both sides to Miss Anna Nash, Chicago, Ill. from an unknown sender (maybe her Aunt Rachel). It is dated and postmarked Nov. 13th, 1874 and folded twice to fit in a brown envelope containing a 3¢ stamp. It starts half-way down on the first page and ends at the top of the page. (The translation of this may not be totally accurate because of the small cursive handwriting)

Context

St Joseph Mo Nov/13/74 Dear Annie Why dont you come back home. This is a hasty note in regard to Elvies Hat. Did'nt I write for blue trimmings, If so I was crazy and I much fear I am as I certainly I did not say blue. My madness is not however from "Much Learning" or the contrary it is from "Much ado about nothing" Elvies best ???? is Green. I am really distressed at anything ??????ness and if the Hat has not been sent and the milliner perfectly willing, I would like pink or rose & black for trimming. Just enough rose to lighten the black. If the hat is on the way or still there and the Milliner unwilling to change the trimming just send it along. Elvie is so accustomed to blue that I never think of any other color in connexion with her. I could whip[ my own self for any stupidity. Mr. Hosea has found out the slippers & suspenders. I was much disappointed. They sent his the monthly statement a nd they were included. He will deduct the Amt. from the account. I suppose I do not know how they will fix it up. Ask your Aunt Mattie to see Mr. Bard about it as I sent her the money for two mentioned articles. I told your Uncle Ike the slippers were returned. And he does not know I sent for another pair. I don't want him to find out. Tell Walter just to purchase the slippers straight out and have them entered. Give much love to all & accept much for yourself from your Aunt Rachel.
