Context

St Joseph Missouri Oct 18th 1874 My Dear Daughter I think you have changed your day of writing the two last letters came to hand on Sunday. I have been quite busy this week or would have answered sooner and I think now I shall have to wait until I get some better ink perhaps Robert took the good ink upstairs who writes a letter for Sarah. Shure enough I have found it. Lizzie is in the Parlor taking her music lesson. I send her into practice her lesson, but unfortunately I never know whether she is practicing right or not. I think you could be of some service to her just now if you were here. Your Grandma has been sick three or four days but is some better today. Mr. Marlow thinks the wall too long for him especially in the hard weather. I think he will leave us the last of the month which is Sunday. Mr. Wheeler and Dr. Austin come up once or twice a week. Dr. Austin and Mrs Townsend took tea with me last Sunday. I suppose you will think a little strange of it, so will explain. Dr. A_______ brought Mrs. Townsend over to the Home of the Friends ??? to sit up with a corpse it was near tea time so they told Mrs. Cunningham they would be down to take supper with us. In regards to your hat get what you like best. Your Aunt Mattie knows what is the most worn. Get what is the most becoming. ball fringe and felt trimming is worn here. I had a letter from Henry this morning the first for three weeks. I miss his letters very much and wish he would write every week. I have bought some winter Apples here to put them in barrels this evening and get them headed up as best I can. I do feel so sorry for myself it is so hard for me to get anything done. Have gotten my winter wood and am trying to get Bill to saw, split and stack it away in the wood shed fear he will be so slow about it that I will lose about a half cord. We are having beautiful weather. Indian summer but it always makes me feel sad. One we all loved dearly was taken from us in that time. I am thinking you will have to come home next month. We are all getting homesick to see you. How I wish you and Henry could come together. I want to go to prayer meeting, guess the walk will be long enough for you. Wont have to go round two or three blocks for the sake of getting a longer walk. What is Henry going to do about his letter from the church parish. You would ask him and let me know when you write. Mr. Fackler has just left here and gone over to Mothers will be back in a short time. He told me to tell you he did not want you to learn too much ?????? say he wishes you would come home he wants to see your ??????? hat. I told him (continues sideways at the top of page 1) you would be home sometime next month. Was that right? Give my love to all the family and especially to Uncle Will and Henry. I will write to Henry in a few days. Write me all the news perhaps. I will want you to get me a corset will write you more about it. If I do ask your Aunt Mattie if the German town yarn like Phoebe's afghan will make a nice scarf or is it too heavy
