Life and Adventures of Frank Grouard is about Grouard as a Scout for the Army during the late 1800s. The book was first published in 1894. De Barthe, the author, was a western newspaper correspondent who wrote the words in shorthand as Grouard spoke them. Grouard was extremely knowledgeable about the Sioux Indians since he was captured by them at age 19 and lived 7 years in the camps of Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. General Crook later asked him to be his scout. Grouard fought at the battles of Rosebud and Red Fork. He was first white man to visit the Custer battlefield after the fight.
