Life of Washington and Marion is two books in one volume, biographies of George Washington and the Revolutionary War general Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox. Henley is the author of the biography of George Washington. Brig. Gen. P. Horry (of Marion's brigade) and M.L. Weems are authors of Marion's biography. No publication date but evidently before 1898.
Handwritten note on front fly leaf is dated 1898.
"The sergeant Jasper mentioned in this book was a brother to my father's maternal grandfather--that is a brother to my father's mother's father. The brother, --my father's mother's father, Nicholas Jasper, was a private in a South Carolina infantry Company, and was in the battle of King's Mountain and Cow Run (?). At the former place he notated (?) that an old woman came up the hill holloring hurrah for King George! hurrah for King George."" when a bullet struck her and her heels flew up like a flash.
On another occasion he carried dispatches--the trip of 70 miles was made on foot in a day; he was accompanied only by his dog, which he kept ? along that all day. He carried a long, slim barrelled shot gun, called a "Fowling piece." on occasion, as he did through the whole war. I saw this gun when I was a bout about 10 years old.
