Lincoln, Abraham: Photo Postcard (large), Photo taken Nov. 15, 1863
Photograph by Alexander Gardner, made in Washington D.C., on April 10, 1865, just four days before Mr. Lincoln delivered his immortal Gettysburg Address. Gardner was an assistant to Mathew B. Brady, the great Civil War photographer. A Scotsman, Gardner had become interested in the comparatively new art of photography and came to this country in 1856, to join Brady in an association that was to make photographic history.
This is universally accepted as the greatest of the Lincoln Presidential photographs, portraying the Civil War President at his prime.....
This photo is identified as Meserve No. 59, taking its name from Frederick Hill Meserve (1865-1962) of New York, the distinguished collector who devoted the major portion of this life to the collecting and identification of all known Lincoln photographs.Lexicon
