Description

The Look of the West, 1860, is a journal by English traveler Sir Richard Burton. He left St. Joseph by stagecoach in August 1860 and traveled west along the Pony Express Route. He gives an excellent description of the terrain and in particular the stations. He did see a Pony Express rider at Guittard Station in today's Kansas (page 34). He stays for a while in Salt Lake City and then journeys on to San Francisco. This is a primary source detailing the look of the Pony Express Trail through the eyes of someone who was unaccustomed to the terrain. The result is an excellent description. The text of this book originally comprised part of "The City of the Saints and Across the Rocky Mountains to California" by the author, published first in 1862. 333/Softbound/Illustrations/Maps
