Lynching of Lloyd Warner, November 29, 1933, St. Joseph News-Press Newspaper. Entire issue from the day after the lynching of a 19-year-old black youth, held at the Buchanan County Jail on charges of alleged rape of a white girl. A mob that eventually numbered 5000 assembled, ordered the sheriff to release the black man. They were forcibly entering the jail and had confiscated and made ineffective tanks sent by the Governor. Tear gas shells used by the sheriff did not avert the crowd. Another 11 black men were in the jail. Rather than have all these prisoners subject to the mob, after much delaying and counter measures, the sheriff turned Warner over to the mob, who brutally tortured, killed, and hung him, then burned his body in the street outside the courthouse. Photographs on Page 2.
