Magazine article from Julia A.E. Haley about Sitka, Alaska, and the Russian Trading Post Curio Store.
"Ka Goo Ahh Kun-ga!"
Of all the paces visited by the Tourist teamers of the famous Inland Passage by far the most interesting is Sitka, The Historic The Beautiful. As you pass White Stone Narrows you enter historic ground. It dates not back to 1898 and and the Klondyke rush, when the old towns of the inland passage were founded, but from a village (now deserted) on your left, the Alaskans saw in 1798 the coming of the first ship of the Russians. Right ahead on Baranoff Island you can see a few houses and a Greek cross the site of old Sitka where the so called Massacre occurred in 1802.
The Boat makes a turn in front of the old town and you see ahead the Mighty Pacific and Mt. Edgecombe, the most beautiful Volcano in North America, sleeping beneath its cover of snow. Another turn and you see Sitka.
Why tell more? You will see it yourself. You will see more than pan can describe. You arrive at the dock. Every thing you see is of interest. To your right is the Government Coal Bunkers Arsenal and Wireless Station: to your left the Native Village Marine Barracks, and town.
You leave the dock through the Warehouse which is one of the Russian landmarks and you are in Sitka, Along the streets the Natives (The Thlingets) offer curios for sale. he things worth seeing are everywhere; the Native Village, Barracks, Greek Church, Block House, Station of the Coast and Geodetic Survey, Russian Graveyard, Russian Orphanage, Sitka Training School, Sheldon Jackson Museum containing the finest collection of Alaskan curios extant (admission 25 cents), and the Sitka National Monument with its totem poles, graves and battle ground - all are worthy of a visit.
Of course you will want some thing to carry home from Sitka. Find the Old Russian Trading Post Corio Store, you can't miss it. It's the old log building with the overhanging roof. You will find what you want here. All Alaskan, all genuine, from a post card to a totem pole; baskets, all native dye, the finest of Native carving in wood, silver, and gold; relics of Old Russian days and of days whose memory is dim when Baranoff founded Sitka. Be sure and Visit the Old Russian Trading Post Curio Store while in Sitka.Subject
