Majors, Alexander: Portrait as Old Man, c. 1899. Mr. Majors at age 85.. It is believed this photo was taken in Dec. 4, 1899, when Majors came through Kansas City from the West on his way to Chicago, where he died in January, 1900. Sepia. matted.
Majors is setting in an upholstered chair facing to left, his hand on a cane. He is wearing medium-colored 3-piece suit, is mostly bald with white mustache and longish white beard.
From handwritten notes of Don Reynolds on back of photo:
:Photo was sent to St. Joseph Museum/Pony Express Stables by Mrs. Orilla B. Poteet of Santa Rosa, CA. It was passed along through her husband's father-in-law, John Poteet, from his father, Samuel Poteet, an assistant to Alex Majores in freighting days and was no doubt given to him by Majors himself. Samuel Poteet is described by Mr. Majors in his "Seventy Years on the Frontier" as 'one of the most faithful of my men.'". So far as we know this photograph has not been previously published and is probably one of the last pictures ever taken of Majors. The Photographer was W.T. Dole of Kansas City."
Miss Louisa P. Johnston, great-granddaughter of Alexander Majors, believes this picture was taken in December of 1899 when Mr. Majors , at age 85, came through Kansas City from the West on his way to Chicago where he died, January, 1900."
