Description

A mandolin (a) and its signed case (b) from the Tootle Family. Mandolin (a): lighter cherry wood face with nylon strings and six (6) tuner knobs. Case (b): signed burlap case with signatures from the Hannabass, Tootle, and Cronkite families with red velvet inside. The donor wife’s (Lillian Trettin) family is part of the Tootle family. It was originally owned by Mildred Petersen, who married William Tootle, from St. Joseph. The case & instrument date from ~1915, and it traveled during summer vacations to Wisconsin back in the day. The case contains the signatures of her friends in St. Joseph, including a couple from the Cronkite family: Ruthanna Cronkite (2015 Francis St.), and Dorothy Louise Cronkite (same address). Kitty thought her mother Mildred probably took it to Wismo in Wisconsin on family vacations and met with friends, who may have signed it then. The later signing, 1970, is by my sister Katherine Hannabass Penney when she was about 10 years old. Sometime around 1990, it ended up at our house but did not get much use.
