She was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma to parents of Alonzo Newman and Emma Bland Newman. She later moved to Kansas City, MO to work for the D. W. Newcomers & Sons Funeral Home.
She attended Madame C. J. Walker School of Beauty, where she graduated in 1936, in that same year she married Orbra Matthews and they moved to St. Joseph, Missouri.
She was the owner of Mary Ellen's House of Beauty, she was in business for 45 years until her illness. She was also a member of the St. Joseph Chapter of Beauticians.
