Description

The Meeting that helped keep Missouri in Union appeared in St. Joseph Gazette of July 13, 1919. Sub head of article is "The Pines" Ashland Boulevard, Where Gen. Robert Wilson Successfully Appealed at Psychological Moment to Swing Northwest Missouri from Secession. Article written by Louise Platt Hauck. At the time of the Civil War "The Pines" belonged to Rufus L. McDonald. Men who attended meeting at The Pines were Ex-Gov. Stewart, Willard P. Hall, Mr. Vories, and Judge silas Woodson of Buchanan County. Mr. Tindall of Grundy, Mr. McPharran of Livingston and Mr. Birch of Clinton County. Wilson was from Andrew County. Wilson called the meeting to appeal to these influential citizens that Missouri was better served by staying in the Union. He cited Missouri as a purchase of the United States as one legal argument that it could not secede, A slave-holder himself, he thought that slavery itself would not survive, with or without war. He felt that Missouri's economic prospects and other fortunes would be better served within the Union. As others agreed, Wilson urged each man to return to his county and run as delegate to the State Convention to consider the question of secession. As a result, all were subsequently elected and voted with others to keep Missouri in the Union, despite the secessionist leanings of its governor, Claiborne Jackson. Hauck mentions that there was a possibility of a plaque being place at The Pines in 1919 to commemorate the meeting. 1/Photocopy/Photograph
