Context

A. The historical map is reproduced from the huge mural painting which hung in the Hotel Robidoux in St. Joseph, Mo. It marks the starting point and route of the Pony Express to Sacramento, Cal. Beside the map is a rendering of a small parchment manuscript containing information about the Pony Express: its founders; trails and outposts; pathfinders and pioneer carriers. It was compliments of the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce for the Centennial. On the front of the folded document is another parchment manuscript that reads in part: "FROM The Days of Ancient Persia to Dawn of Modern Industry Horse and Rider Served to Bind Together . . . IN Mid-Century America, Communication Between St. Joseph . . . and . . . Communities of California Challenged the Bold . . . . FROM These Hardy Souls Who Toiled Over Plain and Mountain . . . In the Spirit of the Pony Express it is for Us . . . New Trails in the Sky Uniting a People in Thought and in Deed." B. The left side of the envelope commemorates the 100th Anniversary of The Pony Express. There is a black picture of a train in the left corner, a wagon train in the right and the epic Pony Express rider in the middle. Beneath the rider states: Official First Day Cover. St Joseph Stamp Collector's Club" It has a brown 4¢ stamp depicting a Pony Express rider. Beneath the stamp reads 'First Day of Issue', below that, a stamped circle with the wording 'Founders * St. Joseph, Mo - Sacramento, Calif *. Below founders is 'Russell, Majors, Waddell'
