Description
Mercantile Bank Staff involved with donation of Gray Mural to Pony Express Museum, Photos (5), c. 1993. Unidentified women and unidentified small group photos of men & women who are part of the Mercantile Bank. Not all photos scanned and attached.
The bank had come into possession of the large map of the United States, marking the western trails, including the Pony Express. The mural had been commissioned from George Gray by the Hotel Robidoux and hung in its Pony Bar'n lounge. In 1938 it was christened by Eleanor Roosevelt. The Mercantile Bank, presumably, acquired it at the demise of the Hotel Robidoux.
The Mercantile Bank donated the mural to the Museum. A January 29, 1995 news photo showing the movement of the mural from bank to museum is part of news story #2020.1.234.
Newspaper picture: A 57 year-old mural of westward trails, removed from Mercantile Bank, is rolled onto a spool for its trip to the Pony-Express museum.
