The building still stands and is in excellent state of preservation. Jim Moore rode from this station to Julesburg and return, a distance of 240 miles, in fourteen hours and forty-six minutes. This station was on George Campbell's relay when he was a Pony Express rider. Later Dan Smith, who owned a ranch and kept a saloon during the Pony Express operation three miles east of this building, lived in this building and was Foreman of the Ranch then operating there. He murdered his wife while they lived there and escaped to the south hills where he was later found and short by a squad of soldiers who came from Fort McPherson to arrest him. Dan Smith Canyon thus received its name. Mrs. Smith was buried close to this old building. The old Oregon and Overland Trail can be seen in the lower left hand corner of picture."
