Miners and Travelers was a guide written by Captain John Mullan, a volunteer from the U.S. Army, who worked under the Governor of the Washington Territory. Mullan was responsible for building a military road 624 miles long from Fort Benton on the Missouri River to the Columbia River at Wallula in Washington Territory. He led the Nez Perce against their enemies in Col. Wrights Campaign of 1859.
With the help of several Indian guides, he explored the territory and mapped routes and gave advice to the new emigrants. This guide book is principally involved with the northern route, to the gold fields, from St. Louis, MO to the Pacific Northwest. The book is divided into three parts: (1) Advice on items to bring along, a daily itinerary, natives and missions on the route, and animal grazing sites; (2) Geography and topography; (3) Mining news and descriptions, locations and activities of mining areas
