Scope and Content

Missouri House of Representatives Resolution No. 197 regarding Pony Express 130th Anniversary, 1990 Whereas, the members of the Missouri House of Representatives take great pride in the significant role which this great state played in the operation of the Pony Express, one of the most exciting and romantic episodes in American history; and 1990 marks the One Hundred Thirtieth Anniversary of the Pony Express, which was conceived and operated by Missouri entrepreneurs William H. Russell, Alexander Majors, and William B. Waddell; and the Pony Express provided mail service between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California, a distance of nearly two thousand miles, from April 3, 1860 to October, 1861; and starting from the Pony Express Stables in St. Joseph, the daring young men who served as riders raced against time, the elements, and hostile Indians in order to ensure that the mail reached its California destination in just ten to twelve days; and the heroic riders of the Pony Express carried the mail in leather mochilas by horseback, changing horses at the relay stations established along the route; and through the venture was not financially successful, the Pony Express secured a lasting place in this nation's history by proving the feasibility of the Central Overland Route to California and by serving as the Union's, most efficient mode of communication until the completion of the transcontinental telegraph; and as the fastest means of communication between California and the East; the Pony Express also played an instrumental role in California's decision to remain in the Union during the Civil War; and the history of this singular American institution has been admirable preserved by the Pony Express Museum, which is housed in the former Pony Express stables in St. Joseph. Now, therefore, be it resolved that we, the members of the Missouri House of Representatives, Eighty-fifth General Assembly, join unanimously with the citizens of St. Joseph and the Board of Directors of the Pony Express Museum as they proudly mark the anniversary of this truly inspiring chapter of Missouri and American history. Be it further resolved that the Chief Clerk of the Missouri House of Representatives be instructed to prepare a properly inscribed copy of this resolution for the Pony Express Museum and St. Joseph Museum. At the bottom of the Resolution are the names of three representatives; Edward H. Schellhorn, Mark A. Youngdahl and Millie Humphreys. Bob Griffin, Speaker of the House, Eighty-fifth General Assembly, certified that the above was true and correct copy of House Resolution No. 197 adopted February 22, 1990.
