Description

Missouri Indians, The is a short history of the Missouri Indian Tribe. The author is from the University of Missouri. In 1907 the last full-blooded Missouri Indian died on the Oto Reservation in Oklahoma. In 1702 it was considered 1500 families in the Missouri village. The Missouri are part of the Chiwere Sioux peoples who came into the Great Lakes area and were known as the Winnebago. A portion moved onto the Mississippi and split as the Iowa went north, and what became the Missouri and Oto moved west on up the Missouri River. The Missouri actually called themselves "Niutachi". Berry details the Missouri's contact with the Spanish and French, and the reduction in their numbers and the eventual merging into the Otos, Osage and Kansa tribes, with their final home in Oklahoma. 12/Softbound/
