Scope and Content
Joseph N. Nicollett's 1839 Maps of the Missouri River and Upper Mississippi Basin were a result of his exploration with a government-sponsored expedition. Left St. Louis on April 4, traveled to Fort Pierre by June 12. Then traveled north to North Dakota and east into Minnesota to end his journey at Fort Snelling. Returned to St. Louis on Sept. 28. Maps are detailed and give an excellent idea of the Missouri River channel at the time of his travels.
