Missouri's Public Domain: United States Land Sales, 1818-1922, This booklet provides a synopsis of the Land Sales in the area that became the State of Missouri from French/Spanish Colonial times to 1922. Described are the grants of land and titling under the French and Spanish and the public sale of land after 1818. Included are the problems that arose from settlers already living on the land when it was acquired by the United States, who had been giving incomplete titles or who had squatted on the land. The booklet details the Acts of Congress that governed the sale of public lands, the concept of preemption, and the land auctions. It describes the changing methods of payment for public lands, warrants given to veterans to purchase land, surveying, and issuance of patents. Land offices and the change in their locations is listed. Maps of the counties in Missouri showing the changing of the number and boundaries from 5 districts in 1804 to 25 countines in 1821 are included. The booklet is designed to provide a guide to those wishing to locate a particular land purchase in the State's archives and thus describes the archives themselves, volume contents, and method of accessing these records.
