"Morning Bird", a poem by Eugene Field, written ca. 1910. Handwritten perhaps by the author. Copy. (Accession book says this is page 3 as indicated from top right numeral) Handwritten on back: "Purchased 1953 from E.P. Korece(?) by Bartlett Boder for St. Joseph Museum. Alas! from yonder maple tree The morning bird sings not to me! Else would his ghostly voice prolong An evening, not a morning, song. And he would tell of each dear spot I knew so well and cherished then, As all forgetting-not forgot By him who would be young again! O child, the voice from yonder tree Calleth to you, and not to me; So make, and know those friendships all I would to God I could recall! Eugene Field.
