Page 2 includes articles concerning the Civil War. Of particular note:
"Resolutions Passed by City Council" listing the resolutions passed by the Council regarding southern sympathizers in residence. It seems that the Military had been lax in pursuing and remanding such persons dislocated from other areas of the state who had come to St. Joseph for temporary living. The situation had become so bad that St. Joseph was in danger of gaining a reputation as a hotbed for the rebellion. The Council asks the Military for stricter measures and encourages the formation of a Municipal Guard to patrol and bring order for protection of persons and property.
"Outrages by Secessionists" reporting on the burning of a school house and a barn in Dekalb County, MO. The school was used to educate Union children--the Southern sympathizers had refused to send their children to the school and had established a separate school. The culprit was not discovered.
Page 3: "The Way to Do It" reports that slaveholders near Weston are interested in freeing their slaves. A pass given to a couple by a Weston slaveholder allows them to travel to Atchison County, KS to sit up their own housekeeping.Collection
