J.B. Moss, left. Mr. Moss's mother, Susan Henry Beattie Moss, later Fleming, right. She died in 1882. The ancestors of both the Moss and Beattie families were early pioneer landowners form Virginia and Kentucky who settled in the St. Joseph area in the early 1800's. Susan's first husband was Preston Talbot Moss, J. B. Moss's father, whom she married in the 1845. Mr. Moss died in 1861. Susan later married a Mr. Fleming.
