L1992.5.29Description
Museum Age was originally written in French. This is the story of the birth and formation of important museums in Europe and the United States from antiquity to the present day. A large part of the book is devoted to the extraordinary private collections of the aristocracy and royalty which so often formed the nucleus for today's public museums. Before the word "museum" became a part of the English language in the 1600's, private "galleries, cabinets and collections" of art works, science and natural history were seldom if ever available for general public enjoyment.
