Scope and Content

NAACP St. Joseph News-Press September 27, 2009 Alonzo Weston has an article about the NAACP branch looks to restart. The group has been inactive since the 1990s. Daniel Hawkins believes that if there were still and NAACP he'd still have his trucking business. He thinks that racism forced him out. Mr. Hawkins was one of about 20 people gathered inside the Bartlett Center to discuss re-activating the St. Joseph Chapter. The group is placed on inactive status when its members falls below 50 members, fails to file annual reports and doesn't pay its assessment fees. The Missouri NAACP is threatening to pull the chapter of all its inactive branches if they don't pay assessment fees and get their membership numbers up. Ms. Spencer and Charles Triplett, another Kansas City NAACP branch member, held a membership drive during Juneteenth celebration and 34 people pledged to become members. Only 14 people signed commitments. The next drive will be held October 28 at the Bartlett Center. 1986 Black columnist Vernon Jarrett was the quest speaker at the annual NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet at the Ramada Inn. His message was that is was time for America to extend itself to a consciousness that says education, education, education. He proposed a campaign to reach all Americans. Vernon Jarrett was at one time the public relations man for the Goetz Brewing Co. St. Joseph, Missouri. Now he a Chicago Sun-Times columnist. 1988, Director's wife to speak Saturday at NAACP event: Frances Dancy Hooks will be the guest speaker at the annual convention of the NAACP state chapter to be held in St. Joseph September 30 and October 1, The focus will be the black family. Mrs. Hooks serves as an aide to her husband, Benjamin O. Hooks and is co-founder and program director of the Memphis Placement Program in Memphis, Tenn. St. Joseph News-Press July 21, 2012 article St. Joseph Muslims observe Ramadan despite hot weather. Charles Triplett senior adviser for the Islamic Center of Greater St. Joseph said that they try to stay out of the heat because if they take even a sip intentionally they are breaking their fast. He added that certain concessions are made for observers who are elderly or on medication. They could put more focus on performing good deeds. The purpose is to provide a sort of cleansing, physical, mental and spiritual. It also offers an opportunity for preparing for the start of a new year on the Islamic calendar and for identifying with those in the world who regularly go hungry. On the margin of the photocopy is a note that reads "If you want , or need to know about al-Islam these Brothers will aid you Charles Triplett and Ramadan Washington" Photocopy article of St. Joseph News-Press October 3, 1986 Timely Observation by Frederick W. Slater. When Kelsy Beshears came to St. Joseph 40 years ago, the hotels were closed to blacks. So were most theaters. Kelsy age 88 will be attending the Freedom Fund Banquet of the St. Joseph branch NAACP. She will not be the speaker but she will be the principal person as far as black progress in St. Joseph is concerned. Before Mrs. Beshears came to town, the NAACP had limped along in St. Joseph. A chapter had been formed in 1916 but died in the early 1920s. It was revived in 1932 but fell apart in 1944. When Kelsy, who had joined the organization in 1914 when she was in high school, came to town, she and other black leaders revived the chapter in 1947 and it is still going strong.
