Description

Native Universe: Voices of Indian America by Native American Tribal Leaders, Writers, Scholars, and Storytellers from the National Museum of American Indian at the Smithsonian Institute in conjunction with National Geographic Magazine. This publication celebrated the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian in 2004. It contains information including fine art, fine craft, literature, and art history about the collections of this Smithsonian Museum. The book is organized into three core sections that cover Our Universes, Our Peoples, and Our Lives. Through essay, literary excerpts, and color photographs the book depicts the lives, arts, and histories of the Indigenous Peoples of North and Central America. The first section discusses the Indigineous Universe. Key scholars such as the late John Mohawk, Victor Montejo, Gabrielle Tayac, N. Scott Momaday, and Jose Montano provide essays and literary expressions that look at ceremony, ritual, worldview, and original instructions. The second section gives various histories through the words of Vine Deloria, Brenda Child, Paul Chaat Smith, and Sitting Bull. Their topics range from treaty promises, Indian education, political struggle, Alcatraz, and the meaning and importance of traditional lands. The final section examines the contemporary lives and identities of Indigenous Peoples. Contemporary writers such as Sherman Alexie, Linda Hogan, Wilma Mankiller, and Louise Erdrich are paired with color photos of contemporary art pieces. The book contains a bibliography, maps, and index. 335/Jacketed/Hardbound/Photographs
