Description

New Lewis & Clark Map War Department copy of a map prepared by Lewis & Clark in 1804, original in National Archives. Lewis & Clark prepared this map in spring of 1804 while preparing for the expedition that would take them to the Pacific. Working from information which they gathered in St. Louis, they were able to present a portion of the Mississippi River: a sketchy chart of the lower Missouri River; a detailed chart of the Osage River; and a crude portrayal of certain salines and watercourses beyond the settled areas. The map shows the districts into which Lewis proposed that settled areas should be divided, now that the Louisiana Purchase had brought the whole region under American control. 1/Map/Folded in Envelope.
