Newspaper article on Emmett McLoughlin found in St. Joseph, Mo., Gazette dated 10-14-1955Context
"Catholic Encroachment Assailed by Ex-Priest" An article covering the presentation of Emmett McLoughlin at the previous night's event.
The article reflects his message for Protestants to be aware of what he termed the increasing encroachment upon ideals of American democracy by the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church. His topics included:
'Should Respect Beliefs' stating he had no desire to hurt the friendly relations that exist between many Catholics and Protestants;
'School System Rapped' saying there are irreconcilable conflicts between these concepts and the teaching of the Catholic Church. He cited the regimentation of thought and the differences in history under the church's educational material.;
'Quotes Papal Declarations' Throughout his lecture he repeatedly pointed out statements from Catholic popes in which the stand of the church was made clear that freedom of religion would be wiped out if a nation were controlled by the Catholic Church.;
'Sees Thought Control Aim' claiming the Catholic Church opposed any separation of church and state and there is a growing control of many newspapers, radio industries, and the motion picture industry and in many large cities of the police, fire department and school boards.;
'Field of Education' McLoughlin said the Catholics are attempting to control the school system through control of the school board and infiltration of Catholic teacher into the school system. In closing he expressed his hope that Americans could discuss differences of religion, politics and race in a sensible, sane manner without resorting to 'name-calling' and ridicule.Lexicon
