Description

Doniphan City Archaeological Site in Doniphan County, Kansas, 1993. "Answers questions about archaeological sites" News story in Kansas Chief, Troy, Kansas, January 28, 1993. Article by Andrew Clements, Historic Site Curator about the ghost town, Doniphan, that was established in 1855 along Independence Creek, a tributary of the Missouri River. It was located six miles north of the current Missouri River bridge at Atchison, KS. The developers expected Doniphan to be a booming river port. Unfortunately the river changed its course and left Doniphan dry. The site was also a Kansa village, at least as early as 1724 when it was visited by Frenchman, Etienne Venirad DeBourgmont. In 1743 a small French garrison was reportedly established there. The use of the abandoned village as a river landmark and landing was documented by Lewis & Clark in 1804. In 1937, Waldo P. Wedel, Smithsonian Institute surveyed the area for archaeological materials ahead of the dams projects that would flood the Missouri River. The results of these explorations are contained in Bureau of Ethnology Bulletin #174. 1/News Clipping
