Northwest Missouri Genealogical Society Journal, April, 1994. Contains transcriptions of various public lists from county records, newspaper accounts, and personal genealogical research connected with the Northwest Missouri Region. Of special interest in this issue Death of a '49er in Andrew County. buried a little way from the Oregon Trail, 1850 Ed Prinz, dance master, St. Joseph Facts about St. Joseph Churches details the history of establishment of churches in the city from 1843 to 1900. Methodist Episcopal Church Class Lists 1894-1906, Index of class members by year. Rockhouse Prairie, one of the first white settlements near Agency, MO along an Indian Trail along the Platte River from Clay County to King Hill, named after a large rock formation created by Indians. Boy Scout Camp Brinton was located near there in the 1920's. Morris Carter Wagon Train from Missouri to Oregon, 1993, retracing the Oregon Trail from Independence, MO. This train also included a casket, representing the 1855 trip by William Keil, in which his son, Willie, died of malaria just days before departure. He had promised his son that he could lead the train west. Willie's body was preserved in alcohol and traveled with the group until he was buried in Willapa Bay, Washington. Issac Hays, 102, Biography printed in Kansas Chief, 1880 is a moving story of a man born in Virginia, whose family became part of Daniel Boone's settlement in KY. Hays served in place of another draftee at Fort Meigs and was taken prisoner when the Americans were forced to surrender to the British General Proctor in the face of overwhelming Indian and British forces. Hays witnessed the torture of fellow prisoners at the hand of the Indians. Paroled he returned to Kentucky only to be drafted himself and serve with Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans, personally seeing the death of British General Peckenham. The story gives a succinct description of Jackson's soldiers, breastworks, use of negroes and the soldiers reactions to the British. After the war, Hays moves to Illionois where he is defended pro bono by Abraham Lincoln and is an acquaintance of Stephen Douglas. Later removing to Holt County, MO, Hays is accosted in 1861 by bushwhackers who steal most of his goods.
