First Pony Express Rider Controversy, in Andrew County Democrat, 1923, declares that a young woman "proved" to the re-ride committee that William Richardson and not Johnny Fry was the first rider out of St. Joseph.
Sarah White, Captured by Indians in Kansas, 1868 is a riveting story about an Indian raid in the Republican Valley near Lake Sibley in which Sarah White was captured, and eventually was joined by another captive, Anna Morgan. The story details Custer's attempts to locate and free the women, including the Battle of Washita and Black Kettle's death. It details Sarah & Anna's release on March 19, 1869 when Custer's army negotiated by capturing three Cheyenne chiefs. Anna who was pregnant was reunited with her husband, but they later divorced and she was judged insane. Sarah became a school teacher and married a man who had been on the first search party looking for her. Sarah's grand-daughter, Marie Keller, and great-granddaughter Helen Kamler lived in St. Joseph in 1995. There is a picture of Sarah in her later years and a letter of thanks she wrote to the Commander at Fort Riley in 1914. Some of the dates in the article do not coincide.
