Francis Marion Posegate Biography, founder of St. Joseph Steam Printing Company and St. Joseph Mayor. The story details his apprenticeship at the St. Joseph Adventure and the cooperation between that paper and the St. Joseph Gazette, especially in getting out the first telegraphic news story--Franklin Pierce's Inaugural Address. He later started the paper, The Weekly West, in which he identified the first Pony Express rider as Mr. Richardson, rather than Johnny Frye. Posegate was an anti-abolitionist but not a slave holder. The story mentions Dr. Doy's underground railroad activities and escape from jail in St. Joseph. Posegate, a unionist, left town abruptly in 1860 when his paper became secessionist, moved to Memphis where he worked as a printer until he was asked to leave town quickly because of his unionist stance. He moved to his in-laws in Highland, Ohio and became a 2nd Lt. in the Ohio 48th Volunteer Infantry, later serving as 1st Lt. in Sherman's Army of the Tennessee, being wounded in the Battle of Shiloh and participated in the siege of Vicksburg.. Returning to post-war St. Joseph, he eventually established the Steam Printing Company, which was nationally recognized, but it failed near the Panic of 1893. He later became editor at the St. Louis Star, and after a sojourn in Oklahoma, died in St. Louis and is buried in Jefferson Barracks Cemetery. A photo of Posegate is included.
Zion Evangelical & Reformed Church History relates the 1857 founding of an established consolidate church for the German immigrants of St. Joseph, including the names of the founding families and the names of the 1881 voting members who ratified the decision to build a new church at 9th & Jules. The church had purchased Ashland Cemetery in 1869, expanding it in 1889, and adding the adjacent Oakland Cemetery to it in 1914. A new edifice at 9th & Faraon, adjacent to the old was built in 1924-1925, the organ built in German was a gift from the children of M.K. Goetz, in honor of their parents.
St. Benedict's Church History--Bendena, KS is a fairly complete history of the construction of three churches on the same site from 1861-1903 and brings the history up to date as of 1991. It also includes a brief history of Bendena, KS.
