Description

Northwest Missouri Genealogical Society Journal, April, 2004. Contains transcriptions of various public lists from county records, newspaper accounts, and personal genealogical research connected with the Northwest Missouri Region. Of special interest in this issue St. Joseph Gazette, January 1, 1879. This is like a modern "Progress" edition to the newspaper. Included is a history of St. Joseph, including the economic impact of the Civil War on the tax base, followed by a detailed account of all major businesses, social and civic organizations, schools, medical colleges, and the State Asylum #2, including an account of the number of inmates, recoveries, and escapes since 1877. John Troxel Rhoades biography which includes his experience driving cattle to Salt Lake City in 1853, living across from Brigham Young and describing Young and his 48 wives going to church on Sunday. He subsequently drives cattle to Stockton, CA and later returns to Putnam County, MO via Panama and New York. He moves at various times to Troy, KS and finally settles in Forbes, MO, Andrew County. He serves in the Civil War. The detail about his wagon trip to CA is very interesting, some details may be exaggerated.
