Keil Wagon Train, 1855, this was the funeral train containing the body of Willie Keil, the wagon leaders son who died 4 days before departure from Bethel, Missouri. Willie's body was placed in a casket lined with lead and filled with alcohol, and the wagon containing this casket lead the wagon train all the way to Willapa, Washington where he was buried December 26, 1885. The account is in story form, with no author given, and includes riveting detail about interaction with Indians, and daily trail challenges. The train, consisting mostly of those of German extraction, jumped off from St. Joseph on May 23, 1855. The group transports their wagons at the Dalles on the Steamboat Wasco operating from the Dalles to the Cascades, takes a rail portage around the Cascades, and continues the trip down the Columbia on the Steamboat Fashion. The Wagenblast family joined the train in St. Joseph, and it is perhaps a Wagenblast descendant who compiled this story from diaries of the trip.
