Description

The Opening of the World is subtitled "The Great Age of Maritime Exploration." Henry of Portugal, dubbed "The Navigator", started the exploration of the world in the 15th Century. The author examines man's first attempts at exploration in the early civilizations, and speculates at explorations as early as 6100 B.C. He continues to discuss the maritime possibilities around the perimeter of the Mediterranean Sea and later on, those of the Swedes, Danes and the Vikings. Much of the book covers voyages of Portuguese and English seamen. The book jacket states, "The Opening of the world is not only a major history of maritime exploration, but also an exciting account of high adventure and daring in face of the unknown."
