Notes

The city of Lourdes, France is a significant site of pilgrimage for Catholic pilgrims. Bernadette Soubirous experienced visions of the Blessed Virgin in 1858 at a spring in this location (Grotto of Masabielle). Pilgrims visit the site to be cured by the spring waters and to pray together at the shrine that was built at the location of the visions. Bernadette was canonized by the Catholic Church in 1933. This mother of pearl drinking cup was used by pilgrims to the grotto to drink of the spring waters.
