Orphans Preferred Author News Article, April 2, 2010. 'Easy Memory to Love' . St. Joseph News-Press. Byline: Jimmy Myers. Christopher Corbett author of "Orphans Preferred: The Twisted Truth and Lasting Legend of the Pony Express" states that there are a few things from the time of the Pony Express as valuable as the Patee House, where about 140 people gathered for the sesquicentennial banquet. The event took place in the ballroom where in 1860, Pony Express riders entertained local women at dances. One of the only aspects of the Pony Express that isn't blurry is that it indeed began in St. Joseph. Buffalo Bill, who took the story of the Pony Express overseas and everywhere in between, didn't let facts get in the way, He kept the memory of it alive and is largely to blame for why we are celebrating today. Mr. Corbett states there never was an advertisement seeking "orphans. " Today , the story of the Pony Express is especially relevant, in that the doomed project collided with technology (the telegraph), Mr. Corbett states like the internet is colliding with American newspapers.. Mr. Corbett was introduced by Gary Chilcote, director of the Patee House Museum. At the bottom of page B1 is the activities for Friday April 2, 2010.
