Description

Our Holiday in Africa describes 1912 trip by William W. Wheeler through much of Africa. It includes many black & white photos taken by him during the trip. It is one of a series of 6 books written by William Webb Wheeler, Sr. (known as W. W.) about his travels about the world. He was encouraged to write of his travels by friends who enjoyed hearing about them. "Each Christmas following each voyage for five successive years the friends of Mr. Wheeler and the old customers of the institutions that he heads have been honored with a copy of these brochures, which he published privately." The "brochures" were leather-bound. The series includes: "Three Months in Foreign Lands," "Encircling the Globe," "Discoveries in South America and the West Indies," "A Glimpse of the Pacific Isles," "Our Holiday in Africa," and "The Other Side of the Earth." At the present time, we do not have "A Glimpse of the Pacific Isles." Each story is accompanied by a half tone lithograph of a photograph of that area. Mr. Wheeler came to St. Joseph in 1872, at the age of 27, and went to work for the wholesale dry goods house of Tootle, Craig, & Co. After changes in ownership, this business became the Wheeler & Motter Mercantile Company on January 1,1908. These books were given to the St. Joseph Museum by Mr. Wheeler's son, W. Webb Wheeler, Jr. 173/Hardbound/Photographs/Maps
