Scope and Content

Parkway Prints Notecards, by Steve Zipp, Artist, 2003. Series of six prints of Parkway scenes in St. Joseph, Missouri, created by local artist Steve Zipp, published as notecards by J. Franklin Gallery, 3605 Beck Rd, St. Joseph, MO. On back of each card is a description of Parkway System and a paragraph describing the park scene on that particular card. Also includes brochure on the artist. "The Parkway System--St. Joseph, Missouri Billed as one of the finest boulevard systems in the United States, St. Joseph's Parkway ribbons through the city for 26 miles. Developed in 1918 by internationally known landscape architect George Burnap, St. Joseph was one of the first cities in the United States to prepare and follow through with an imaginative and comprehensive parkway plan. The system included a green belt from north to south, which was placed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. The system is a popular walking, jogging, biking, and touring attraction. A = Entryway to Krug Park The Krug Park lagoon built in 1928 dominates this view, looking west from the Krug Park flagpole. The city's oldest park claims it official date as 189 when the Krug family donated the first land for public use. Countless numbers of park visitors have taken pleasure from feeding the ducks, fish, and geese that call the lagoon home. Above the lagoon, the formal rose gardens have become a place for lovers to wed. Moving on up the hillside, the amphitheater awaits another performance that will entertain visitors." B = Krug Park Tunnel Through the years, this tunnel has seen countless numbers of fathers entertain their sons and daughters with a trip through its arching walls. It may not have been what planners intended back in the 1920's when the Krug Park drive was planned and created, but today it's a tradition. As the family car glides through the tunnel, there seems to be an irresistible urge for fathers to honk the horn as their children giggle and laugh to the cacophony of reverberating sound. C = Corby Pond Corby Pond with its undulating shoreline beckons to visitors year round. On the north are gently sloping grassy banks and on the south a forest that includes virgin oaks press down to the waters edge. Stocked with bass and other fish the pond has been host to countless numbers of visitors including ducks, loons, and geese. The four acre pond is one of the parkway system's crown jewels. D = The Parkway "S" Curves The city's 26 miles of parkway roads meander through miles of shady woods like these. The parkway's gentle curves and winding ways are an enticing seductress calling visitors to slow and enjoy nature's ways. E = The Bridge to King Hill St. Joseph's Park Board started acquiring land for a parkway drive to the overlook at King Hill in 1921. The drive crosses over this bridge, designed to pass over Second Street, then curves its way winding upward to the hilltop where American Indians believed a sun bridge would lead them to the great hereafter. Today, it is still one of the favorite spots for lovers to come and share its panoramic view that sweeps south from Wyeth Park and Prospect Hill along the Missouri River floodplain. F = Hyde Park In 1915, Calvin Hyde donated 10 acres to the city for a public park. Today, Hyde Park, with its enlarged grounds, is the southern anchor to the city's park system. The swimming pool, play grounds, tennis courts, ball fields, and picnic areas are used year round. The park is the site of one of the city's premier annual events--the Southside Fall Festival. Local residents raised funds, a few years ago, to create this brick and iron entranceway that welcomes visitors to the original parkway entrance.
